Frequently Asked Questions

The basics

What is 3M™ DI-NOC™? A line of self-adhering architectural finish films from 3M for interior surfaces such as walls, columns, doors, and cabinets, with 900+ patterns.
Is "interior vinyl wrap" the same thing? It's the common term. DI-NOC is a specific 3M product line in that category.
Is it paint or wallpaper? Neither. It's a film with a pressure-sensitive adhesive, designed to replicate materials like wood, stone, and metal.
Does it look real? 3M offers textured series (e.g., Premium Wood with matte, textured surfaces). Judge with physical samples in your space.

Is it the same as a vehicle wrap? No. It's related self-adhesive film technology, but DI-NOC is a separate 3M architectural product with its own specs; vehicle films aren't substitutes.
How is it different from wallpaper? Wallpaper/wallcoverings are mainly for walls (commercial grades can be very durable). DI-NOC can also resurface doors, cabinets, desks, columns and elevator panels. See the comparison.

Fit and suitability

What surfaces work? Per 3M: metal, wood, interior glass, and properly prepared surfaces including drywall; complex curves are possible.
What doesn't? Damaged, wet, or failing substrates; high-heat areas; floors; anything structurally compromised.
Can you wrap laminate countertops? Horizontal work surfaces see more wear; evaluated case by case and often not recommended for heavy-use tops.
Can it go in bathrooms? Some wall areas may be suitable; areas with standing water are not. Evaluated at site survey.
Fire-rated doors? Possible only where the product/series and assembly are acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction. We don't certify compliance.

Operations

Do we have to close? Not necessarily. Staged or off-hours installation may allow many businesses to remain operational, subject to a site survey, safety requirements, and property/landlord rules.
Is it noisy or dusty? 3M describes DI-NOC installs as involving less noise and disruption than traditional construction. Some surface prep is still required.
Is there an odor? 3M reports CDPH emissions testing for the product; any prep materials are discussed during scheduling.
How long does it take? It depends on square footage, surface complexity, and access. You'll get a schedule after the survey — we don't quote generic timelines.

Cost and value

Is it cheaper than remodeling? 3M positions DI-NOC as more cost effective than traditional construction materials. Whether it's less expensive for your project depends on scope — get a written quote and compare.
Will it raise property value or rent? We make no ROI promises.
Do you list prices online? No; every project is quoted after evaluation.

Durability & care

How long does it last? 3M’s March 2024 DI-NOC technical data sheet lists an expected performance life of 12 years for indoor, vertical applications. This is a product expectation, not a warranty or a promise for every installation; actual performance depends on the product, surface, installation, environment and care. Ask for the applicable product and project warranty terms.
How do we clean it? 3M lists resistance to common cleaners and disinfectants; follow 3M maintenance guidance and avoid abrasives.
Can it be repaired? Damaged sections can often be replaced locally; exact match depends on pattern availability.
Can it be removed later? Removal is possible but may affect the underlying surface depending on substrate and age.
